Dj Pain-Dear Orchid(2001)

HERE'S A FDH EXCLUSIVE!

Alot of sites, blogs and message boards are following the fruits of Dj Pain nowadayz. What you probably dont have is THIS mix titled "Dear Orchid". This live mix from 2001 sets the precedent for Pain's uncanny ability to meld our favorite genre's of music into a storyboard and then complete it with a ready, polished and finished product. This is a piece of his catalog that is quite rare unless you are a friend of Pain or live in San Diego. "Dear Orchid" gives a glimpse into where he has been and where he is going. An ode to the lady of his life, Orchid One, his inspiration, support and strength. Including an exclusive Blame One intro verse on top of a Dj Artistic Heater, this mix starts off with a bang and carries a truck full of energy and emotions throughout. Pain Is a real down to earth DJ with extrodaniry talent, who works, sweats and bleeds for our music community. Enjoy!

Buddy Peace-Sudden Death Blues(SFR Winter Podcast 2009)

This is an hour long music mix put together by SFR’s resident DJ, Buddy Peace! Download it for free and let it keep you warm on these cold winter nights. Not only is this a smorgasbord of genre bending blends and obscure soundbites but Buddy Peace acts as a narrator throughout. It’s wicked cute.

Tenshun-Nihilism(2007)

“Skrapez is founded by Jonathan Calzo aka 10shun and are based in San Diego, CA. They do all kinds of fucked up beats mixed up with turntablism. The Skrapez crew give us skillful scratching with distorted sound pictures which are usally bad, but still gives us a real feel of underground sense. You need to listen openminded or you probably will be offended by their style.”

40winks-Extended Pleasure EP(2005)

40Winks is a 2 member crew from Belgium consisting of Padmo & Weedy. Their debut vinyl release, Extended Pleasure is a testament to their blunted, melodic, downtempo hip-hop. On this EP, 40Winks showcases instrumental hip-hop tracks that arent just tracks that lack lyrics. Tracks such as Producers Beware, Melancholia and Wishing Upon a Beat keep the listeners attention by creating a thematic edge, meticulously dropping clever sound bites, scratches and jazz licks. The music is very much jazz on the turntables + MPC, shifting moods that are dynamic and versatile, yet relaxing and chill.

Blockhead-The Music Scene(2009)

New York hip hop producer Tony Simon aka Blockhead returns with his third and best instrumental album for Ninja Tune. Blockhead has long made beautiful, emotive music based around the hip hop template, but on The Music Scene he elevates his craft to another level. Tony puts it down to the use of Ableton, which means that rather than working from "one basic beat and building off it" (the standard hip hop model), he has begun stringing together multiple beats and weaving them together into increasingly complex, surprising and satisfying pieces of music. As he himself puts it, "I made each song a little more of a musical journey than anything I have ever done before."

Money Mark-Brand New By Tommorow(2007)

Money Mark is the alias of Mark Ramos-Nishita, a keyboardist whose funky, retro-flavored riffs earned him the unofficial title of the fourth Beastie Boy. Born in Detroit to a Japanese-Hawaiian father and a Chicano mother, Nishita moved to the West Coast when he was six; some years later, he hooked up with the Dust Brothers production team and began overdubbing keyboards for the Delicious Vinyl label. While working as a handyman, Nishita accepted a job repairing the Beastie Boys' Silverlake, CA, home; soon, he became a pivotal member of the group's Grand Royal posse and performed on both 1992's Check Your Head and 1994's Ill Communication. Fast forward to 2007, when a shared association with none other than Jack Johnson -- via Beasties producer Mario Caldato, Jr. -- led the way to a contract with Johnson's Brushfire label and a new Money Mark pop album, Brand New by Tomorrow.

This is my favorite Folk-Pop album that's come out in the last couple of years. Over & Over & Over again, my lady loves it, my son loves it and I really love this album. It will grow on you. Big up all my Mexanese folk(or Japxicans). I love you JACER your my number one mutt!

Banksy-Banging Your Head Against A Brick Wall(eBook)

9 times out of 10 you won't catch me with a book in my hand. However, if you did it would probably be something along these lines. Gawking at Graf and reading the oh so kooky and insightful paragraphs every couple of pages. However, this one was a nice and short, fun read (and I didnt just look at all the pictures). Some fun writing, some how to's and street stories from BANKSY himself.
Take a Gander.

Four Tet- Late Night Tales(2005)

Combining jazz, folk, psychedelia, experimental and hardcore Hip Hop, this collection reaches far into Four Tet’s expansive musical map – featuring gems from Joe Henderson, Smoke, Manitoba, Madvillain, and an exclusive Four Tet cover of Jimi Hendrix’ "Castles Made of Sand" and much, much more. usually list the tracks but your gonna have to listen and DIY this one, Just cuz.

Four Tet-Pause(2001)

Spawned from the urge to do something apart from his post-rock band Fridge, Kieran Hebden's Four Tet project balances organic and programmed sounds. Hebden formed Fridge with Sam Jeffers and Adam Ilhan while still in high school. When Fridge went on temporary hiatus for Jeffers and Ilhan to attend college, Hebden spent time playing with ideas gained from hip-hop and electronica that he hadn't had time for while concentrating on the band. Eager to experiment, Hebden bought a computer and began collecting drum and sound samples. Though his tracks sounded contrary, Hebden produced them all in his flat using only his computer to loop, slice, and paste downloaded samples and rhythms. This is a one of the results. Enjoy!

Buck 65-Talkin' Honky Blues

I love this dude, The Triple Threat(and The Centaur). Red Right, White Left! Self made Beats, Lyrics and Cuts! The man is a total package and he can ballroom dance too, I've seen the Feist vid. I love the craftsmanship of this man, something like an old american muscle car, not the flashiest thing on the road but willing and able to leave your ass in the dust. This canadian artist puts a new spin on Hip Hop & Folk music as we know it. Take a vivid trip into the mind of Buck 65.

Die Young And Deeskee-Ravish(2005)

“Ravish”, as a concept album, is the perfect platform for Die Young (The Shapeshifters) to spit his unique style of rock ready gruff emcee vocals mixed with his vampire hunter persona in search of the living dead. This album was produced and written while watching a number of horror movie scenes from films that had no soundtrack to support the macabre action taking place during pivotal points of said films, “I studied the hell out of the placement and execution of incidental music and soundtrack music in films to figure out how the feel of each scene was dictated musically and I ran with that formula". Ravish becomes a realized concept alum in that each song is meant to play along with the movie scenes they were written for, as opposed to music being written as part of a soundtrack. The album also features strong appearances by Los Angeles heavyweights: 2mex, Busdriver, Akuma, Life-rexall, Existereo, AWOL One, and Xololanxinxo.

Neila-Vertical Trees With Eternal Leaves(2003)

Emmerging from the talented life-spring of Los Angeles hip-hop artists is the Hawaii born lyricist Neila (Pronounced: Nay-La). In the midst of a culture clearly dominated by patriarchal poetry stands a female who is confident with her intensely personal lyrical content and straight up storytelling abilities. Her first full length album, "Vertical Trees with Eternal Leaves"(2003) is a testament to Neila's ability to run with the best of them as all sixteen tracks meld into one anticipatory breath that will definitely stand as a solid starting point for a career that is sure to become extremely prolific.

Silver Apples-Contact(1969)

This is a great psych album from the sixties that will mess your head up. The Silver Apples are a psychedelic electronic music duo from New York City composed of Simeon Coxe III, who performs as Simeon, on a primitive synthesizer of his own devising (also named The Simeon), and drummer Danny Taylor. The group was active between 1967 and 1969, before reforming in the mid 1990s. These dudes were way ahead of there time and layed the ground work for countless electro rock groups.

Contact is the second album by Silver Apples. The cover and inner artwork generated a lawsuit from Pan Am Airlines. The cover features the Silver Apples in a plane cockpit with drug paraphernalia and the inner artwork showed the band amongst a plane wreckage playing banjos. The lawsuits from Pan Am proved to be the demise of the band and the label KAPP Records, who could not endure the fatal series of lawsuits.

Flevans-Make New Friends(2004)

Flevans, the one man band coming out of Brighton, is a broad based multi instrumentalist. Having been classically trained in piano and double bass to grade seven, he went on to pick up the guitar, drums, and occasionally dabble in the mandolin. He managed to get signed to Tru Thoughts while bumming around in a college bong haze on the strength of a few tracks he made loading jazz and funk samples into a ten second sampler that was built into a mixer and laying them down, loop by loop, onto a cassette 4-track. To get signed to Quantic and Bonobo's label without a computer or working instruments, that is picture in the dictionary impressive.
